Taking Your Dog to a Dog-Friendly Bar

Many people enjoy hanging out with their dogs as much as they enjoy hanging out with other people. Bars are beginning to notice this, and in response, they are beginning to allow patrons to bring their dogs with them. Maybe you are thinking of bringing your canine companion to one of these dog-friendly bars. Here are a few tips to help ensure your first time is a good experience.

Bring a bowl

Most dog-friendly bars will offer the dogs water and maybe even bar snacks (dog treats). However, they do not always provide bowls for the dogs as they may not have a way to keep them separate from the human dishes and clean them. Most bars will keep disposable dishes on-hand for dogs, but your dog would likely be more comfortable drinking and eating from his or her own bowls, so bring them along. If you find that you're visiting the dog-friendly bar often, you may want to buy a pair of collapsible silicone bowls, which are easy to transport and non-breakable.

Go for a walk beforehand

You're going to the bar to relax, but your dog is going to be so excited to be surrounded by people and other dogs! If you take them for a walk before your bar visit, they will work out some of their energy, allowing them to settle in more quickly at the bar. Going for a walk also gives your dog a chance to go potty, so you are less likely to need to take a break and bring them outside during your bar visit.

Bring a harness and a short leash

Your dog might get a little excited, and you want to have good control over them at the bar. Bring them in a harness, not a collar, so you don't do any damage as the dog pulls against you. Make sure you also bring a leash that you can keep short and handle easily. This is one situation in which a plain, nylon leash is a better choice than a fancy retractable leash. You can loop a short nylon leash around your chair more easily if you need to have both your hands free for a minute!

Hanging out at a dog-friendly bar can be a lot of fun for both you and your furry companion. Just bring your own bowls, go for a walk first, and make sure your buddy is sporting a harness and a short leash.
